Persian Dance Class Begins JUNE 22
TUESDAYS 6/22/2010 - 8/24/2010
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Experience one of the East's most enchanting dance forms. Persian dance emphasizes lyrical hand gestures, flirtatious facial expressions, playful shoulder isolations, subtle hip movements and dazzling spins. While is shares some elements with Arabic Raqs Sharqi, Persian dance is ancient and distinct, with different historical, ethnic and regional forms. The beautiful and compelling 6/8 rhythm common to many Persian dance styles provides the perfect accompaniment to this delightful dance.
Students will learn Dr. Gray's ''Classical Persian Positions'' based on her research into Persian dance, art, poetry and architecture. In addition to classical elements to build technical strength, students will be introduced to folkloric styles such as Ghassemabadi and Bandari. Contemporary Persian social dance movements will also be covered along with improvisational skills. Costuming and cultural context for the dance will be explained.
