Auditions for Silk Road Dance Company

Celebrating our 15th anniversary this year, the award-winning Silk Road Dance Company is the East Coast's pioneering ensemble of women's dance traditions from Central Asia, the Middle East, the Caucasus and beyond. Silk Road Dance Company is a Joy of Motion Resident Arts Partner.and has performed at DC's most prestigious venues as well as nationally and internationally. Silk Road Dance Company has invitations for more international performances in 2010 and 2011.
Interested dancers should schedule an audition slot by calling 301-585-1105 or via e-mail at silkroaddance@aol.com.
Dancers are encouraged to have a valid passport.
Prospective members should bring a photo with a dance resume and prepare a short solo of approximately 3 to 5 minutes. The piece may be in any dance style, preferably Middle Eastern or Asian, and must be performed in costume and make up. Immediately following the individual solo presentations, all dancers will be taught several ensemble combinations that reflect SRDC’s diverse repertoire drawn from over a dozen distinct cultures. Please bring rehearsal clothes for this part of the audition.

Start the New Year by shaking things up! Every belly dancer needs a dramatic Drum Solo in her repertoire and this brand new choreography by Laurel Victoria Gray promises to enhance your technical and artistic skills. Students will learn dynamic isolations and shimmy combinations layered with feminine and flirtatious movements of the arms and torso. The choreography spotlights a variety of different Arabic rhythm patterns and traveling steps -- along with a few playful surprises.

Rhythm provides the heartbeat of Middle Eastern dance, making knowledge of basic rhythms essential to every dancer. Participants will learn how to make different, distinctive sounds with finger cymbals and will learn to play some of the most basic patterns. Students should bring their own finger cymbals for this class. This class is suitable for beginners as well as dancers with some previous experience.

For thousands of years, the network of caravan route known as the Silk Road linked China in the East with the Mediterranean in the West. People, goods, ideas, music and dance traveled along the Silk Road, resulting in many cross-cultural connections. This workshop will explore some of the most characteristic dance elements from Turkic, Persian, and Indian cultures Participants will learn basic footwork, hand gestures, turns and shared movements common to several Silk Road dance styles.

Annual auditions for Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) will be held Sunday, September 20, 2009, at the Joy of Motion Dance Center, 7315 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 180E, (the Air Rights Building, East Tower) in Bethesda, Maryland, from 5 to 7 pm.
Interested dancers should schedule an audition slot by calling 301-585-1105 or via e-mail at silkroaddance@aol.com.

It is highly recommended that individuals interested in auditioning attend a live performance by the Silk Road Dance Company. Familiarity with the company’s mission statement and repertoire -- available at the official website www.silkroaddance.com-- is also strongly encouraged.
Membership in the Silk Road Dance Company constitutes a considerable time commitment. Company rehearsals are presently Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
