Excerpts from ''In the Garden of Two Worlds: Dancing Persian Poetry''

Dancing is when you rise above worlds, tearing your heart to pieces and giving up your soul.

These dances from In the Garden of Two Worlds derive from the movement vocabulary of various regions of the old Persian empire and from ethnic groups that speak Persian (Farsi) or Persian dialects.

1. Azzizam
Drawing from the elegant lines and garments of Persian Saffavid miniature paintings, this choreography is set to a song by the popular Iranian singer, Haydeh. The skillful manipulation of flowing silk veils typifies Azeri dance. Both the Saffavi and Qajar dynasties had Azeri roots.

Don’t grieve, my love, for life is beautiful.
Don’t be treacherous with anyone, for the world has many colors.
